The Los Angeles Kings have officially entered a new chapter. On Sunday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the organization has fired head coach Jim Hiller. The move comes at a critical juncture for the franchise as they struggle to maintain their footing in a highly competitive Western Conference playoff race.
Jim Hiller's tenure with the Kings spanned five seasons, beginning with his role as an assistant coach. He eventually took the reins as head coach during the 2023-24 NHL regular season. While Hiller successfully guided the team to the postseason in every year of his leadership, the Kings were unable to find success beyond the first round. This lack of playoff progression, combined with the team's current slide, appears to have been the deciding factor for the front office.
Currently, the Kings find themselves on the outside of the playoff bubble looking in. With 59 games played, the team has accumulated 62 points, leaving them three points behind the Seattle Kraken for the final Wild Card spot in the West. With the regular season entering its final stretch, General Manager Ken Holland clearly felt that a desperate change was necessary to close the gap and spark a late-season push.
Interestingly, this transition highlights a shift in management dynamics. It is worth noting that Holland did not originally hire Hiller, and with the immediate appointment of a successor, the General Manager is moving quickly to stabilize the bench.
Taking over the head coaching duties is DJ Smith. Smith is a familiar face in the locker room, having served as an associate coach under Hiller this season. With prior experience as an NHL head coach, the organization is banking on Smith's familiarity with the current roster to provide a seamless transition and immediate results.
